Now more than ever, we need a place to come together as a community — a place where we can rub shoulders with people of all colors, classes and beliefs, listen to music, and engage in conversation.

Farmers Market Ogden serves as that gathering place between June and September, but where can we meet now, while it’s cold?

The winter market is new. It begins Saturday, Jan. 20, and continues each Saturday through Feb. 24 at Union Station.

Essentially, it’s Farmers Market Ogden adapted for the indoors.

The Downtown Alliance started managing the Farmers Market Ogden on Historic 25th Street in 2016. It was such a success that people almost immediately began lobbying for a winter market, said Kim Bowsher, with the Downtown Alliance.

“We’re not just pulling an event out of thin air. People have been asking for this,” Bowsher told Leia Larsen, a reporter for the Standard-Examiner. “We’ve put a lot of thought into it, working with our growers, getting to a point where we could support it.”

Like its summer counterpart, the Ogden Winter Market features local vendors. But given the time of year, its focus shifts to preserves, canned goods, hot food, coffee and hardy winter produce.

Expanded access to fresh, locally grown food improves community health. But it also helps the Northern Utah economy.

Growers selling their products locally create 13 jobs for every $1 million they earn, according to the Farmers Market Coalition. Money spent at a farmers market stays in the community, supporting local businesses.

Levi Call of Call’s Freedom Farm in West Haven calls the Ogden Winter Market “really exciting.”

“With the winter market, it really expands your opportunity to make sales,” Call told Larsen.

Bowsher anticipates about 60 vendors setting up at Union Station. The market, open from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., also features live music and free yoga lessons.

We needed a new place to gather as a community. Now we’ve got it — the Ogden Winter Market.
